Games of no chance
These are games in which each player has full information and there is no element of luck. There could still be a stochastic element in creating an initial state (as in Set or Boggle), but this is common to all players. Most classic board games fall in this category.
Games of some chance
In this category I mostly like so-called "German-style board games", defined on Wikipedia as "a broad class of games that generally have simple rules, short to medium playing times, high levels of player interaction, and attractive physical components.The games emphasise strategy, downplay luck and conflict, lean towards economic rather than military themes, and usually keep all the players in the game until it ends. German-style games are sometimes contrasted with American-style games, which generally involve more luck, conflict, and drama." Examples of German-style board games include Carcassonne, Bohnanza, You're Bluffing, and Settlers of Catan.
Theater games
Theater games are group games that involve acting. They can be used as exercises for performing a play, as icebreakers, and even to address themes of social justice.
